Scout Badge for Boxing

What does this group think about a submission for a Boy Scout Badge for
Boxing?

Outline for badge:

Place 1 box, including proper clues and home-made stamp, and post to our
website.
Find Five boxes with clues and stamps.

A BSA badge would have to involve a lot more than planting one box.  they really know a subject when they get done with merit badge requirements.  However, it would be a fun addition to the Cub program and they younger boys would be just as capable as the older ones.  They may even have more fun.  And I just bet there would be no problem finding a counselor for the badge among all the boxers around the country.  And it incorporates so many scout tasks and skills in one activity.  I'm talking it up every chance I get with my son's troop

I think it's a good idea. The amount of boxes planted or found could be a bit higher but I don't know anything about how easy or hard other badges are to get. The basic idea sounds good though.....Chuck and Molly

I don't think a specific publication method should be mentioned (i.e.,
"our website"). For example, creating and publishing a box thru the Valley
Quest program is just as legitimate.

I'm not sure 'Boxing would stand on its own as a Merit Badge. You would at least have to add a short history of Letterboxing and discussion and demonstration of different carving mediums and tools. I think planting at least 2 boxes - one involving a hike with map and compass, another perhaps at a site of historical or civic significance should be required.
Maybe as a start, it could be an alternate requirement in the orienteering MB.
I do think Letterboxing would make for a fun event at an orienteering day or camp-o-ree.

I think that would be awesome if you could get it approved ....

I doubt that a merit badge would be approved. I think the scouts are
trying to keep the number of merit badges from growing too much. It
looks like they will delete older badges to make room for newer ones.
The Signaling and Sheepfarming badges are some of the casualties.
There would likely be too much overlap from existing badges. The
orienteering badge comes to mind. They (BSA) might approve a patch or
other award as they do for snorkling, historic trails, 50 miler, etc.

However, Letterboxing could certainly be an outlet for some of the
applications of skill and knowledge. Is that part of the process of
gaining an award? Not to mention mentoring and activity direction
for the olders Scouts.

I know nothing of the system for the Scouts, but if you read my clues
for the three boxes I planted for the Kennedy Creeks series, I tried
to use skills and knowledge of Botany, Native Culture, Compass use.

I won't mention the art and craft aspect of the box itself.

It was my aim that the kids could learn something, make use of some
skills and have fun.

I think the boy scout badge is a good idea. But I think that it should
be a little harder and require that the box placed use compass heading
directions.

Consider and don't shoot the messenger:

Maybe the idea of a  letterboxing badge could be one that encompasses several of the scouting skills as well as carving, finds and plants.  It has been decades since I've been anywhere near scouting and all the requirements, so, what do I know. Considering some of the events of this past fall, first aid could even be included in the requirements for such a badge.

If anyone wants to see the requirements for the current badges, go to
www.meritbadge.com

There is also info on how to recommend new badges.

I think it's a really cool idea. My son will be in Boy Scouts in another 2 years- just finishing up his Bear now- he loves to letterbox and would love a badge for it. I think that carving the stamp would need to be a requirement.
